Sad news to report:

Davy Jones, the lead singer of The Monkees, died this morning after suffering a heart attack in Indiantown, Fla., his representative confirmed to ABC News. He was 66.

I’m not one to mourn the loss of every celebrity, but Davy is different.  For whatever reason, The Monkees have long been my favorite band.  Maybe it’s because these guys were thrown together thanks to a newspaper ad seeking quirky guys in their 20s for a TV show and they ended up forming a band that 45 years later still toured the country playing to sold out crowds.  Have to admire that.

I saw Davy Jones (both with The Monkees and solo) perform live more times than anyone else.  Elton John comes in second.  The last time was when The Monkees 45th anniversary tour stopped in Indianapolis in June.  After the show I met Davy.  Looking back on that today, I’m really glad I went to that concert.
